<b> Coco Chanel – 100 years </b>
Coco Chanel is undeniably one of the most well-known and respected designers, ever. She’s the only fashion designer to have ever appeared in Time Magazine’s ‘100 most influential people’ and has been an iconic name in fashion for many years. As the 100th anniversary of her first store opening is nearby, Chanel’s Creative Director Karl Lagerfield has directed a new short film, starring Keira Knightley as the French legacy. The film is not a biopic of her life, but instead is a film that is to pay homage to the iconic designer and follow her journey. It will be screened for the first time at the Chanel Cruise runway presentation, which will be this month in Singapore.
The film will document Chanel as she opens the first store and the location of where she opened the boutique in Deauville, France will be recreated using retro sets to make it as realistic as possible. It’s been 100 years since the first boutique was opened all the way back in 1913, on May 8th and Lagerfeld has many ideas for how to recreate the feel and ambience of the city. He uses black and white “improvised” pieces, which gives it that classic, elegant feel and adds a touch of mystery to the film.
Entitled ‘Once upon a time…’, the film is to capture the essence and “invented reality” of the beautiful Chanel. Also featuring models Lady Amanda Harlech, her daughter Tallula Harlech, Lindsey Wixson, and Stella Tenant. The rest of the cast are also some of Lagerfeld’s favourite models, including Baptiste Giabiconi so we’re already guaranteed a flawless looking cast.
It’s such an exciting anticipation, as we all know Keira has endless sophistication and a certain je ne sais quoi about her! She’s been the face of Chanel Coco Mademoiselle Perfume for the past 6 years since she was first chosen to represent the brand, so it was no surprise that she’s been picked for the coveted role. Since 2007, she’s been featured on numerous campaigns for the brand so it was a completely fitting role for her to play the part of Coco.
In 1915, Harper’s Bazaar made the bold statement that any woman “who hasn’t at least one Chanel is hopelessly out of fashion.” The perfume, the bags, the jewelry… these are all things that Chanel is famously known for. Chanel No5 in particular was her signature scent and not only is it iconic as a perfume, but its smell exudes sophistication and grace. As a designer, she was innovative, distinctive and incredibly elegant. When she passed in 1971, she left behind a legacy and a name that will be significant and highly respected in fashion forever.
Undoubtedly bold, creative and authentic, this is definitely a work of art that Mademoiselle Coco herself would be of. Happy 100th anniversary!
